HELP END THE VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN AND GIRLS IN THE DRC

Did you know that:

• 5 million people have died as a result of the violence in the Democratic Republic of the Congo
• Hundreds of thousands of women and girls have been raped since the conflict began in DRC
• It is estimated that 40 women are raped every day in South Kivu in eastern DRC
• Nearly 50% of survivors of sexual violence in DRC are children.

About the City of Joy

The City of Joy is part of a worldwide campaign that was initiated in 2007 to raise awareness about the level of gender violence in the DRC and advocate for change throughout the Congo. Conceived and developed by the women on the ground in partnership with V-Day and the Panzi Fondation (DRC), the construction of the City of Joy began in September 2009 and opened its doors in June 2011. 

The City of Joy will provide up to 180 women a year with an opportunity to benefit from: group therapy; storytelling; dance; theater; self-defense; comprehensive sexuality education (covering HIV/AIDS, family planning); ecology and horticulture; and economic empowerment.

The City of Joy will provide women a place to heal emotionally as they rebuild their lives, turn their pain to power, and return back into their communities to lead.
